You are looking at the adapter plate that was added to the shift lever on the transmission to allow for the difference in angles of the shift cables between the donor pickup and the FMC. In the donor, the cable came from about a 45 degree angle from above the transmission. In the FMC it comes from the horizontal so this plate was bolted to the shift lever and then the cable attached to the plate. The length of the radius between the input shaft of the transmission and the attachment point of the cable determines the length of the stroke of the shift lever up front.
