The Dieselfication of Coach 1046

This album is dedicated to following the process of Coach #1046 being converted from a 1976 Chrysler 440-I with a 4spd Allison AT540 transmission to a 2006 GMC Duramax LBZ turbo diesel with a 6spd Allison 1000 double overdrive transmission. After the final adjustments to the cradle, we are good to go!


Since there was no room to get a cherry picker over the engine and under the top of the engine compartment, the scheme was to support the engine/transmission assembly from below. Here a wooden cradle that I constructed for this purpose is being test fitted.


Eric is getting the last of the bolts ready to pull when the engine is supported. Four bolts were left, one on each end of the transmission support and one on each end of the engine support.

Just about ready to remove the engine and transmission.


Here you see the connectors that come from the front of the coach and formerly fed that rat's nest of wiring. These connectors will be replaced by a buss bar system. No more connectors to have poor connections.


Here you can see the progress that has been made in removing wiring. The necessary lines are being labeled so that they can be reconfigured under the new configuration.


This picture of the right half of the firewall will give you an idea of the existing rat's nest of wiring that was created at the factory and then doubled in complexity over time as various things were added and removed from the coach over its 36 year life. That will all be removed.


At this point, the driveline and all but one of the connectors to the engine and transmission are disconnected. Getting very close to engine/transmission extraction.


Our work surface was improved when a friend brought over about eight 4'x8' pieces of 1" thick plastic that we could lay down. This created a nice, clean, slick surface for us to work on. Thanks Anthony!


There are a LOT of things to disassemble to remove the engine and all of its control systems.


We are getting down to the engine itself. This is what you see when everything else is out of the way.
