Here is the "rail yard" area of one of the train setups. Did I tell you that there are a number of setups? | Here we are watching the trains on the largest of the setups. To get an idea of size, look at Rachel at the far end. I said Jim has been a train nut for a long time. All of these train boards and the scenery have been personally made by Jim over many years. | What is it? No, not the thing with wheels, but the thing with three colored eyes? That's right, it is an old crossing guard with lights and gate. Jim likes the big, real things as well as the little train things. Oh, yeah - the thing with wheels! That is a very rare one person, hand powered cart that a rail worker would use to travel down the tracks to either inspect the tracks or travel to another location. | Here is Jim, the Master, quietly talking his new Apprentice, Jesse, through the control process of the multitrain layout. Not many people would entrust something they have spent years building to a new, young apprentice, but Jim knew he had a good, responsible student this time. |
Did I mention that the building all of this is in is a two story building. For you mechanical types, this is the draw works of the elevator we took to and from the upstairs where the model trains and other things are located. And, yes, the draw works frame is made of wood. | But then, so is the elevator! Jim has restored the elevator that many years ago was used to move cars from the lower level of a dealership up to the repair area on the second floor. It handily carried the entire group at one time. | Tucked into the back corner room was an unrestored circus wagon. A friend of Jim's moved it here many years ago and it has remained ever since. Lynn, Rachel, Jesse and Ken are looking it over. | In between the first and second stops, we had lunch in a period diner/sandwich shop and then walked on over to the county courthouse. We then toured it and the city hall across the street. Note: Jim doubles as Mayor of Carthage. The county courthouse is very impressive and very well designed and built of Carthage stone. Carthage is known for the stone that is quarried in the area due to the quality and light color of the stone. The White House is constructed of Carthage stone and that is why it is the color it is. I neglected to bring my camera to lunch so this picture was taken while driving the coach past the courthouse through town as part of a caravan. Turn your head for a vertical view! The building encompasses an entire city block. |
The caravan contined along Rt 66 until it came to the Big Red Barn RV park where we were staying the night. The coaches from front to back are #617 - Woesterman, #1046 - Heinrichs, #645 - Borrmann, #890 - Shewmake. | Another view of the coaches the next morning. | Here is Frank and Ken talking to Jim. Now you will notice that Ken has a bandage on his forehead. I will not explain what occured to cause Ken to have the bandage. For that explaination you will have to attend the next rally that Ken and Lynn attend and ask Ken for the story. | At this point, the Borrmann's had to return home due to other obligations even though they would have preferred to continue with the group. This is Frank, Suzanne, Rachel and Jesse with coach #645. |
