Rt 66 Rally - 2009
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums)

This is a photo gallery of a few of the photos taken by Stephen Heinrichs. The first few pictures document a little of the 2,000 mile trip it took to get to the rally location in Springfield, MO from California. The rest of the pictures document the visits to special attractions arranged by the Rally Master and Route 66 itself. A great time was had by all.

This is an original Carthage newspaper that hangs in the General Store.

Here is the garage where the various rolling stock is maintained.

We then left Red Oak and went into Carthage where we parked the coaches. Our next stop had limited parking space so the plan was for everyone to pile into Jim's coach and just use it. When he fired it up he heard a belt squeal a little, so he quickly changed plans and fired up a couple of his cars for us to use to get to the next stop. This 1961 Austin Healy was one of those cars! Now do you think Suzanne is going to enjoy driving this car. I also think Rachel really was going to enjoy the ride as well. Frank was there as well to provide Crew Chief duties as needed. Jesse had a big grin as well.

Here Frank is giving Suzanne a little coaching on operating an old style English gearbox. Yes, Jesse is loving it! Note: Frank quickly identified the cause of the belt squeal and eliminated it, but we took the cars anyway!

Since we wouldn't all fit in the Austin Healy, Jim and Stephen took this 1960 Jaguar. The Clugstons and Shewmakes were relegated to a modern SUV so I didn't take a picture of it.

Ok, you saw Suzanne as she was getting ready to head out. Now, after the drive out take a look at the grin on her face! That's one of those grins that takes about three days to go back to normal. This was probably the high point of the trip for her. By the look on her face, I also think Rachel now wants one of these when she gets her driver's license.

Our actual next stop was at Antler Art of the Plains which is the name used by artist Larry Glaze and his son, Mark. After retiring from a previous occupation, Larry started creating artwork from shed antlers and other natural materials. He was gracious enough to give us an extended personal tour of his facilities and explainations of his techniques and of the many works that he is in the process of creating. It includes one going to President Bush.

If you look again at the previous picture of the eagle made from moose antlers, you will see something small set into the wooden base. This is a closeup of the base. Now you can see the carving done using the root of a shed antler and then inset into the wood base.

Here are three eagle in flight. While not shown, he makes very large and inticate chandeliers and tables as well as the set pieces. Again, google Lary Glaze for more information.

What's that - another BIG grin! It looks like Suzanne let Frank drive back and we have another "grin attack"! Yes, I think we have confirmed it. Both Rachel and Jesse want one of these when they get back home.

Now understand that our Rally Master, Jim Woestman, is and has been a train nut for a very long time. So after parking the cars, we then took a tour of the building in which Jim keeps his coach, cars and trains. Here is a shot of one of his train layouts. Jim is operating it while we watch.

I did learn that, like many of us, Ken Clugston has refused to grow up. He really enjoyed the trains as we all did.
