Closet Shelves added | ||
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums) I recently observed some shelves on the back wall of the closet in coach #400. Since the closet is deeper than needed for hanging clothes, it appeared to be a good spot to add some narrow shelves for storage of various things. So here are pictures of how I added shelves to my coach #1046. |

Here is the top left corner of the closet. | Top right corner. | To support the shelves, a vertical board was attached to each side. I used a 1x6. Before installing it, I trimmed the board to make it 1 inch narrower at the top as the side of the coach angles in by about that much from the middle of the sidewall. Also, I used my radial arm saw to cut groves every 2" at a 5 degree angle to support the shelves and slope them toward the wall so that things placed on the shelves would lean against the wall and remain stable while traveling. | Same thing on the right wall.
Looking down at the bottom of the closet. | Measure twice, cut once! I used these two tapes to measure the inside distance between the two side support boards. I measured at the top, middle and bottom. The results were very close. | There are different ways that the shelve could be attached to the side boards. I elected to have small metal plates at each end of the shelves that could be slid into the groves that I previously cut into the side boards. To make the plates, I cut some nailing plates in half. | See how the plates are attached to the bottom of the shelves.
This is an end view of a finished shelf. Note that there is a lathe attached to the front edge of the shelf to keep things from vibrating off of the shelf. | The bottom shelf has been slid into place. | Here you can see where the shelf itself is against the side of the coach even though the side board has a gap. | Here are the first two shelves with "stuff" on them. The bottom shelf is 4.5" deep for the larger items and the next one is 3.0" deep to not intrude into the area needed for clothes.
