Fuel Gauge Sender Access Hole
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums)

For coaches #700 and up, there was an inspection hole provided by the factory. This album provides pictures of that access hole.

Here is a picture of the access hole under the driver's side bed. The outside rear corner of the opening is 8 1/2" in from the outside wall and 24 1/4" forward of the rear wall. The opening is 8"x8".

Removing the wooden cover reveals the metal liner underneath and the plate covering the second hole.

Removal of that plate reveals the top of the fuel tank and the fuel pickup and sending unit assembly.

On the later coaches, there were three hoses attached: engine fuel pickup, generator fuel pickup and vapor recovery tube to the vapor recovery canisters. The earlier coaches did not have the vapor recovery system.

Hoses have been removed. Due to age, they had to be split to be removed.

Here the fuel pickup assembly is being extracted. When doing this, be carefull to not damage the fuel level float or the wire to the sending unit. Positive voltage goes to a terminal on the top of the unit and then down through the sending unit to the tubes and then up to a ground wire that is attached and connected to the aluminum sheeting above the tank.

Here is the unit after it has been extracted. Note that mine has three tubes instead of just two as I had an Edelbrock fuel injection system which needed a return line. The vapor recovery spot was extended to serve as the fuel return line. The earlier coaches just had two pickups: one for the engine and one for the generator and a vented tank cap. In this picture the generator pickup is on the left, then the engine pickup and then the fuel return line.
