The Dieselfication of Coach 1046
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums) This album is dedicated to following the process of Coach #1046 being converted from a 1976 Chrysler 440-I with a 4spd Allison AT540 transmission to a 2006 GMC Duramax LBZ turbo diesel with a 6spd Allison 1000 double overdrive transmission. There is a companion discussion thread in the Mechanic's Corner section of the Forum area of this site. |

Here you can see the progress that has been made in removing wiring. The necessary lines are being labeled so that they can be reconfigured under the new configuration. | Here you see the connectors that come from the front of the coach and formerly fed that rat's nest of wiring. These connectors will be replaced by a buss bar system. No more connectors to have poor connections. | Just about ready to remove the engine and transmission. | A new day! Getting ready to do the actual extraction. Eric W. on the left and a new recuit, my son Mark, on the right. Note the shade canopy as it was going to be a hot day.
Eric is getting the last of the bolts ready to pull when the engine is supported. Four bolts were left, one on each end of the transmission support and one on each end of the engine support. | Since there was no room to get a cherry picker over the engine and under the top of the engine compartment, the scheme was to support the engine/transmission assembly from below. Here a wooden cradle that I constructed for this purpose is being test fitted. | After the final adjustments to the cradle, we are good to go! | The plan was to have a transmission jack under the engine lifting the cradle and a floor jack under each end of the transmission support cross member. Here is the left side.
And here is the right side with the other jack. Three jacks, 12 wheels, and three people coordingating the lowering of the unit and its gentle, slow roll out from the bowels of the coach. | It worked!! With the engine out of the coach, we were able to roll the cherry picker up to the the engine with its legs on either side of the transmission jack and attach it to the engine. | Here you can see the positioning. | Here you see the engine and tranny all of the way out. We rebalanced the attachment point and removed the assorted jacks as everything was now suspended from the cherry picker.
