The Dieselfication of Coach 1046
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums)

This album is dedicated to following the process of Coach #1046 being converted from a 1976 Chrysler 440-I with a 4spd Allison AT540 transmission to a 2006 GMC Duramax LBZ turbo diesel with a 6spd Allison 1000 double overdrive transmission. There is a companion discussion thread in the Mechanic's Corner section of the Forum area of this site.

Since all of the electronics have been installed, the turbo to intercooler tubing has been installed. The display screen that you see at the center bottom will be moved to on the dashboard.

The fuse and relay center that was originally on the donor's fender is now fully populated and will control many functions with relays that were previously direct wired such as the rear tail and clearance lights and the trailer lights. They now get full voltage and are brighter.

A few of the added circuit breakers are on the side of this box as well as a switch that will turn on the "ignition" so that the engine can be started from the engine compartment. The box itself has all circuits for the engine and everything else that is at the rear of the coach going through numbered connectors that snap out for trouble shooting or testing.

And, finally, here is the dash cluster with the engine running. Idle rpm is at 500. Good oil pressure and alternator output.

All aluminum panels are now back in place.

It didn't look completely "right" until the ladder was reinstalled! Also note that the work table that we have been using during this project is now gone!

This is what a mobile shop looks like! I transferred all the tools that I thought I might need into the back of my '87 Subaru Brat tow vehicle so that at the conclusion of this visit I can tow it home to Oregon behind the FMC. I will have to come back with my regular pickup and trailer to haul all of the other misc. stuff that I have here home also.

I love this picture! It is of the dash at night without the flash with the engine running. I will need to put smiley face stickers over a few spots to cover the lights for ABS, etc. that are not incorporated into the coach. I think it will take too long for the LED lights to burn out. One option would be to do microsurgery from the rear to excise the lights!

Here is the same picture taken with flash so that you can see what the driver will see.

Since I did not use the donor steering column, two switches that are on the gear shift had to be relocated. These are Eric's calculations of the resistance values that needed to exist for a momentary up/down switch to shift the transmission manually when it is in manual mode. Since this transmission is a 6 speed it would take 9 positions if each needed spot was separate. GM eliminated that need by having Drive, Manual and First gear positions. When in Manual, the rocker switch allows the driver to select a specific gear from 1-6. That switch is the original generator start/stop switch on the center panel of the dash. A push button switch was also added for tow/haul mode.

Its no longer there! We moved the coach under its own power out to the driveway for better access for getting ready to test drive. See where it went via the link in the Forum/Mechanics Corner/The Dieselfication of 1046.

After putting 30,000 miles on the coach in the last two years, it was time upgrade the cooling capacity of the coach. It was fine on flat land, but had inadequate cooling on the grades. This an earlier picture of the fan that I have been running. It was replaced by ....
