The Dieselfication of Coach 1046
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums) This album is dedicated to following the process of Coach #1046 being converted from a 1976 Chrysler 440-I with a 4spd Allison AT540 transmission to a 2006 GMC Duramax LBZ turbo diesel with a 6spd Allison 1000 double overdrive transmission. There is a companion discussion thread in the Mechanic's Corner section of the Forum area of this site. |

The floor was notched and raised a number of years ago when the original conversion was done from a 727 Loadflite to the Allison 545. Allisons are bigger! This will get cleaned up and lined. | Here is a closeup of where the wires and plumbing for the power steering etc. come out of the tubes that carry everything from the front to the back and visa versa. Looks ugly after 36 years on the road! | ...all of the stuff on the right side. All of this will be redone or removed as part of this project. | Here you see all of the wire bundles on the left side and ...
Looking forward from where the transmission used to be, you can see that there are a lot of wires and plumping coming and going from the front of the coach to the back of the coach. | Now with the engine and tranny out of the coach, they will be prepared for shipment to the buyer of the assembly. Work will now switch to preparing the coach for the insersion of the Duramax/Allison 1000 six speed. | All out and time for a break! | Here you see the engine and tranny all of the way out. We rebalanced the attachment point and removed the assorted jacks as everything was now suspended from the cherry picker.
Here you can see the positioning. | It worked!! With the engine out of the coach, we were able to roll the cherry picker up to the the engine with its legs on either side of the transmission jack and attach it to the engine. | And here is the right side with the other jack. Three jacks, 12 wheels, and three people coordingating the lowering of the unit and its gentle, slow roll out from the bowels of the coach. | The plan was to have a transmission jack under the engine lifting the cradle and a floor jack under each end of the transmission support cross member. Here is the left side.
