DRIVE-AXLE INNER BEARING SERVICE. | ||
Author: andy1canada (Show all albums) As I've prefaced in the Mechanic's Corner thread, what follows is an amateur pictorial and description of my first attempt to grease the inner drive axle shaft conical bearing assemblies on #846. There's likely some things I could have done better, or, differently and all are welcome to chime in with their own input to help make this a more useful reference to encourage other owners to do this important job on their own coach. This is how I did it with what I had to work with. Good luck! |

1st cup out... | Looking in here it's hard to see the bearing cup, but it's in there yelling at you, "grab a couple of picks and work me outta' here dude!" Bent coat hanger rod or rebar wire works good to make hooks. | ...the spacer ring came next. Yes it has a split in it, like a piston ring. | Next is first innermost bearing. Note: the cup (there are 2, one for each bearing) may or may not come out with the bearing. In my case it didn't... | ||
...out she comes. | ...finally got'er and little by little... | ...now to get the 3-jaws hooked in while keeping all three of these pricks hooked into the seal... | After seeing how little space there was between the shaft and the seal I realized the 3-jaw puller I'd bought was probably too 'clubby' to get in there and again wished I had a 2-jaw one like Dan used. So I decided to make up little clip/hook jobbies to get in there and then hook the jaws into them and pull it out. What a calamity that idea created. Needed three extra arms to hold shit in place with all the 'hookin & screwing' going on... | ||
...now to pull the seal. Scrape some of the crud from the perimeter. I then sprayed some penitrant on it to help it ease out. Prolly didn't need it. NOTE THE SEATED DEPTH OF THE SEAL BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT! | ...then the yoke should slide off... | ...then the washer... NOTE: SEE THE COTTER PIN HOLE? (see next pic also) WHEN YOU REINSTALL THE YOKE - BE SURE THE COTTER PIN HOLE LINES-UP CORRECTLY WITH THE 'VALLEY' OF THE YOKE OR YOU WON'T GET THE COTTER PIN BACK IN! Don't ask how I discovered this. UPDATE: There a actually TWO cotter pin holes perpendicular to each other through the end of the shaft. | Then get the nut off... As I have the wheels off the shaft spins freely when you try to take the yoke-nut off. I used a wide-jaw vicegrips to hold it and it worked on the first side I did. BE CAREFUL OF THE BRAKE-LINES! | ||
