Receiver Hitch on Coach #1046
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums) Originally FMC's did not have hitches. A hitch was developed by FMC that could be retrofitted to the coaches. Later, as receiver type hitches became popular many coaches had their hitch upgraded to the receiver style. Mine was upgraded by RVS of Morgan HIll. These are pictures of the installed hitch. |

Here is Greg's attached to the engine crossmember. It provides a good anchor for the hitch. | Here are two more pictures. Greg Miller was kind enough to share some clear pictures of the hitch on coach 708. Note that he as well as I have the heavy duty bumper framework. | This is looking down at the forward end of the receiver tube where it bolts to the cross member. By extending the tube forward, it gives it another anchor to the frame as well as leverage to resist verticle and horizontal rotational forces. | (2 Comments) The receiver tube extends forward where an end plate welded to the tube is bolted to an angle iron bracket that is welded to the frame cross member that also has the engine motor mount support arms attached to the opposite side. You can see a portion of the original muffler bracket to left.
This shows the receiver hitch that was installed. The thick middle layer is the half of the original hitch that was retained to bolt to the bottom of the beam that is behind the bumper and that spans between the ends of the frame members. Below that plate is a spacer and then the receiver itself. | Here is a photo of the original hitch in it's present state as yard art. This portion was cut off and no longer used. Note that this hitch was standard on the later coaches and is rated at 5000# with a tongue weight of 500# as stamped into the metal.
