Rt 66 Rally - 2009 | ||
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums) This is a photo gallery of a few of the photos taken by Stephen Heinrichs. The first few pictures document a little of the 2,000 mile trip it took to get to the rally location in Springfield, MO from California. The rest of the pictures document the visits to special attractions arranged by the Rally Master and Route 66 itself. A great time was had by all. |

Given that I had a long way to go to get from CA to MO, this stop just across into Wyoming covered all of the first night's requirements: sleep, food and fuel. | Speaking of fuel, these signs are put up along the highway to remind drivers of neccessities just incase they get too entranced with the great views. Aw, I am good for another 30 miles! | Let's revise that estimate. Since I coasted to a stop going up this hill at the distance stated on the sign before my intended fueling location, I now think that I only had 29 miles of fuel! Because of the kind assistance of others, I only lost about an extra 15 minutes. | Fueled up, I continued on and UP and UP. Near the top of one of many Wyoming passes, it was cold and FOGGY in June! See the proof.
I spent the next night in North Platte, NE and when I got up in the morning and went for a little walk, this is what I saw. While I think the sign is correct, they are really great machines and go like the wind when there is fuel in the tank! | Given the prior day's experience, I was careful to not make the same mistake the next day. Here I am fueling up. What a good boy am I! | You will note the destination at the top of the GPS screen. We are rolling good and I am running ahead of schedule, so I called ahead to the campground and reserved a space for tonight. | Blue skies, fluffy clouds, green grass and, what's that, another one of those stupid signs stuck in the grass. Yep, I am stopped again, but not due to fuel (I learned that lesson!). I guess I am being taught another lesson about checking fan belt tension when you stop for fuel as I have been running fast across six states and am in the seventh state and, you guessed it, the infamous FMC fan belts disintegrate! And I just reserved the camping site!
Well, I made it to the campground that night and saw another FMC on the way to my site. It was too late to visit that night, but in the morning I was finally able to meet Denny Shewmake and his grandson, Roy, in person. Let the party begin!! | This is Frank Borrmann inspecting the underside of #617 where some weights were added. Jim W. had about 500 lbs. of weight added to the front of his coach to improve handling as it helps rebalance the coach after the change to the 8.2L Turbo Detroit Diesel. Notice the weights behind the bumper as well. | Here is coach #1046 at the KOA campground in Springfield, MO. where we all met up to start the Rt. 66 rally. It was a good campground choice with nice mature trees. | Here are Denny Shewmake, Jim Woestman and Suzanne and Frank Borrmann visiting with the Borrmann's coach, #645, in the background.
