Location: Santa Cruz, Calif. (76.102.4.114) | Note: This is a yearly informal meeting of the Aero Cruiser owners club. This year I would like any FMC owners to join us. Both are antique and unique motorcoaches. No formal plans, just come and enjoys some of the most pristine land in California.
Frank (an Aero Cruiser owner) & I are going to make Indians in about 2 weeks. We will arrive on April 15 (a Thurs). Unfortunately I will have to leave the next day ,as Carolyn & I both have work. But any of you may stay thru the weekend or as long as you like.
Below is a re-print of last years announcement. All of Indians is open now except for 1 campground that is still recovereing from the 2008 fires.
I will post more info later.
Carolyn & I usually go to Indians once a year. This is the best time of year for Indians. We are considering going on Thur, April 15 and stay through Fri, Apr 16. Those who wish to stay longer, may. Last time we were there it was free, but could be $10/night. There is a large group area and individual sites.
Let me tell you about Indians campground: it is listed in the NPS but you will never find it. It is located in the Los Padres National Forest but it is also on the Fort Hunter Ligget property and so it is blanked out by Google and no maps may show it and there are no directions. You just have to know how to get there. Word of mouth.
Indians is totally dry camping. No services. Pack out what you pack in. Unless one has privledges at the PX on the Fort, the nearest market is an hour away in King City or Paso Robles. We have to ford 2 rivers to get there, about 8-12in deep. We walk it first, but we've never had a problem. The river bottoms are paved. Then it's dirt. From the Fort center, it's about 30 min of good, decent dirt road to the campground.
Why do we go there? It's remotness and lack of popularity makes it very private and secluded. Even cell service is very sketchy. At this time of year the grass is green and possibly the meadows of wild flowers are up. There are trails or you can hike anywhere. I suggest bringing bicycles or a runaround car. You can photograph, shoot or climb. There are several large streams, I do not know if they support fish.
I propose any interested parties let me know. We can meet at the entry to the Fort and I will caravan you in. I should also mention that the most unknown of the California Missions, Mission San Antonio, is here and you may want to tour it.
