Regular | I'm about to replace the pinion seal and it looks like the cover the seal is in must be removed. It seems the pinion wants to come out with the cover and I hesitate to pull it as it looks like there is a bunch of extra hardware that wants to tag along. Shims, bearings etc. Can I use a puller and just pull this cover away from the pinion and bearings, etc and leave the pinion in place? Thanks for any advice. Hal

Regular | Thanks Lou, that helps even though it is a bit generic. I was hoping for some advise from someone who has replaced that seal. Any 'be aware of' type of things. Also it looks as though the seal called out in the parts book is a triple lip seal but the replacement CR/SKF seal isn't. Maybe best to leave it alone?

Regular | I think you might be right Stephen, why try to fix something that isn't broken. After sitting nearly 20 years and then making a 600 mile trip without leaking, its probably fine. Think I'll just leave it alone. Hal

Expert Location: Cottage Grove, OR | I would seriously investigate whether or not to move the differential 2 inches forward. Bill Sitton 902 did and I can vouch for the fact that 2 inches at the rear of the coach is significant. You need to explore that and make a decision before you get further into the project

Regular | If I move the differential would there be sufficient room for the engine at the fire wall Stephen? I didn't think there was enough extra real estate there for a 2" encroachment of the new power train. I also wonder how the additional ujoint angle would effect them long term. BTW, did 1046 have the double floor at the transmission tunnel? I didn't notice it in your build album. I'll have to remove mine before I can roll the assembly in for a look see. Hal

Expert Location: Cottage Grove, OR | Yes, mine has the double floor there where the transmission sits. And yes there was significant room at the firewall because of the length of the transmission. I don’t crawl very good anymore, but it would be interesting to crawl under mine and see how much room I have between the downpipe and the firewall.

Expert Location: Cottage Grove, OR | If I remember correctly, I did some extra things to heat shield that firewall right where the downpipe calms down. I also converted to a 4 inch downpipe along with the rest of the exhaust system to make that free-flowing to help get rid of heat out the exhaust pipe and not out through the exhaust pipe walls.

Regular | After rolling the engine/trans into place the distance to the fire wall looked to be about 3 1/2". Yesterday I dropped the differential enough to pull the 1 1/2" by 3" solid bars that secure the diff to the chassis. I made a jig to move the anchor bolts 1.75" forward and re drilled the holes. That's one big chunk of steel to drill. Reinstalled the diff and am ready to relocate the engine assembly. Thanks to Bill Sitton for letting me pick his brain a bit and Lou Cruse for information on the research he had done on moving the differential. Oh, and thanks Stephen for the extra work you handed me with your suggestion. . Hal
