Before I spend money on having my Alcoa's polished/clear coated and buy new 19.5" tires I want to explore my options to get to a 22.5" wheel. Either staying with the existing 5 on 8 patter or moving to the modern 10lug options.
Who (and how) here has made the switch to 22.5"?
I want to run a taller tire something in the 36" tall range.
It would seem to be the easiest to have 5 to 10 lug adapters made and use modern wheels.

I've ditched this (22.5") option. There's just no reasonably priced way to do it.
I'm now shopping for tires and I'm interested in how many of you have upsized to 245/70r19.5? I know it's "not approved" for the 6" Alcoa width, but I also know that it has been done. I'm a big fan of the Hercules H-902 tire(used in the past) for this size.
I'm also looking at the stock size of 8r19.5 and Double Coin RT600s are on sale for $160 shipped in this size. They are the tallest (34.1") in that size range and I like that, they are also well reviewed.
Any input is welcome.

Contact Frank Borrmann as I believe he uses the 245/70 tire.

Stephen,
I emailed him earlier today...just waiting to hear back.
What are you running on your coach?

I am running Sumitomo 8r 19.5 tires. Six of them mounted and balanced was about $1,600 in Feb.

For what it's worth:

IIRC the stock Michelin XCA's (17's) were about 33.2" tall. That is a really tall tire for a 17"and up-there even for a 19.5". I would caution you, Len, before you crank a set of 36" wheels on that puppy. Why, you ask?
According to Jim Black (again, for what it's worth considering the source) nearly all the 22.5" wheels he dealt with 'rubbed' on the wheel wells. From my perspective, this observation might/should prompt at least a little deeper examination of this conversion.

If this saves you some grief, it was worth it.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Wheel well contact or not I think the 22.5" wheel looks the best. The diesels love the tall wheels, gasoline powered not so much.

I agree, and if I could find a way to to do it for reasonable money I would. The best estimate I got for 5 to 10 lug adapters was $3200 for a set, then there was another $700-800 in hardware needed. Then I get to buy wheels and tires(though selling my 19.5 alcoas would have offset that)... Just wasn't worth it. There are some European made steel 22.5" wheels available now but they are really heavy and I had no interest in that...it was a modern aluminum wider 10 lug wheel or nothing for me on that.

I'm leaning more heavily toward the Double Coin RT600 8R19.5.

It's 34.1" tall which will fill the wheel well, I wish they were a little wider but it is what it is...the 245/70r19.5's are a good bit wider but are only 33.5" tall and I want all the free ground clearance I can get. The airbag suspension I'm installing would eliminate most any rubbing issues up to about 36" tires..

Here's Frank's reply that I got this morning:
"I put Michelin 245/70R19.5's on my coach in 1997 and have replaced them once since then with the same tires. I like the look and they have always run true and been vibration free. I don't think they help the handling of the coach, I think the side walls are too stiff and cause the coach to follow the track of which ever front tire has better traction at a particular moment. Toe change on jounce and rebound is a major fault with the front suspension on these coaches.
I have a second coach with 8R19.5 Michelins on it and it handles much better. Both coaches have a Cummins and Allison setup. Leslie Hoagland of MCR told me the best choice of tire is the 8R19.5, he had a lot of experience with these coaches."

This is true except for the 6 spd Allison transmission that Len and I are running. It provides the taller gearing that a diesel needs without a change in tire/wheel size. At 60 mph I am turning 1650 rpm which is ideal for the Duramax. At 65 mph I am at 1850 rpm and at 55 mph I am at 1500 rpm which is actually too low of an rpm as I am below the peak torque of the engine which is at 1650 rpm. Len wants the taller tire for ground clearance and not engine rpm as he will be spending significant time off road with his coach.

Okay, all of you be serious for ONE minute, then you can rag on me.

I have 19.5" steel wheels on #968. Recently when having the coaches tires balanced, we discovered two of the rear wheels wobbled side to side, one bad enough that it couldn't be balanced. The other wobbles, but could take weights to get it within .25 oz.

I checked with Stockton Wheel, who used to fabricate wheels for RVS, and they no longer make the 'individual' wheels, but make them paired on one hub. We never made it to price because they advised it would require replacing wheels on both sides, not one.

I'm not a mechanic, I'm just the "We" involved in Stephen's projects. So, asks I, "aren't they all the same wheel and interchangeable?" Says he, "No, dual wheels are special. They require a lot of extra work to get everything in alignment on the wheels and are not interchangeable."

Are Dodge wheels an alternative? Is that only for the 17" wheels? Other alternatives?

I NEED one, but would buy two. Cash, no tax forms.

Feel free to laugh whilst typing a response.
