Location: Cupertino, CA | Recently encountered a sponginess in the shifter, which ultimately resulted in necessitating putting the 727 transmission in gear by hand (yes crawling under the coach). I could then put the coach back into park or any gear where the lever moved upward, but could not move into any gear where the lever moved downward (R, N, D, 2, 1).
After putting it in gear and driving it to my favorite mechanic, we discovered the cable had "shredded" near the front of the coach. The wire cabling surrounding the shifting cable (giving the entire cable stiffness and the inner cable protection) had deteriorated to the point several of the wired had broken allowing the inner cabling to flex and reducing the stiffness to the point it couldn't push, only pull.
The location of the damage to the cable was forward of the firewall where the cable leaves the shifter - however, most of the damage was inside of the FOAM! We were able to discover it by looking from the bottom up.
After we had the entire cable out, I noted the plastic exterior protecting the wires had cracks the entire length about every 1 to 1 1/2 feet, even the area protected by the tubing it runs in to the rear. However, the only real damage was in the first 2 - 3 feet of the cable. A new cable is being made.
Next is to inspect Coach 968 for similar damage.
