Has any one used 22.5 rims on the rear with 19.5 on the front. Looking to reduce rpm’s and retain the turning radius. Have the original 440 with the 727. Would the large rears reduce engine rpm’s with this engine trans configuration also wondering about a 46RH transmission swap in the future, or a Duramax allison swap again in the future. What might this due to the handling characteristics would this move the center of gravity forward significantly and would that be good or bad.
Thank Jim

I don't know of anyone that has used the large rims on the rear and small on the front. As to the effects, while I don't know as I have not done it I would expect some handling issues.

Doing everything that you need to do to change the tire size would cost significant dollars. I would reserve those funds for either putting an overdrive transmission behind the 440 or doing the Duramax/Allison swap. You do need to decide which path you are going to take: either gas or diesel then focus on the options for that fuel/engine type. There are other, newer fuel injected engines with overdrive transmissions should you want to go that route. It is not just 440 or diesel.

Stephen, can you recommend some possible transmission options for the 440 that would only require moving the differential forward and not having to move the engine back. Can it be done without having to shorten the drive shaft?

1. moving the engine back would be easier and there's plenty of room to do it. moving that differential is no joke..
2. retaining the original prop shaft shouldn't be a priority...it's undersized.
If I were going to keep a 440 and wanted an overdrive I would source an SAE3 adapter and install a 6sp allison (from a c4500/5500 kodiak donor) with a stand alone controller. Costly up front but puts you in the best position to do a modern engine swap later when you're ready..

I have what starts out a 46RH behind a 440 in #902. A few pictures in the overdrive album. Also a thread,
http://www.fmcowners.com/mbbs22/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=801&post...
I ended up moving the differential forward 2”. I would say that is the most it would go. I lowered the differential on a transmission jack, then removed the mounting bars and had them ( machine shop) drilled 2” off the original holes that bolt to the differential housing. Have to reroute some wires and hoses but easier than I thought it would be.
Should be at the Chama Mega rally this July with some performance results.

Bill thank you for the information could you expand a little bit more on the the modifications you made to the 46rh to make it only
1 5/8 “ longer than the 727. I went to look at #15 today left open to the elements so in rough shape hope to get it for a reasonable price still lots of usable parts but the interior is shot.

I used the 4 wheel drive overdrive housing and had a park brake drum cut down and shortened for my rear yoke. I had to have the output shaft threaded to bolt on the rear yoke. I used the 46RH case and valve body but mostly 47RH internal parts.
We did 3 of the first run and I had 4 more shafts threaded to build the next run.

Thank you very much. If I should have more specific questions as I get into the transmission swap may I contact you?

Sure. If you make Chama you should be able to get hands on.

On #589, my Michelin tires are rubbing on the spindle bolts. I think I will be the first to test two 19.5 Alcoas with 225/70/r19.5'son them, then test, on Ellis Safe Wide Wheels, 33 x 12.5 x 16.5 tires. The bad news on these tires is they are no longer made in a M&S tread, only made in off road tread. Here are some questions, 1. Are there any spindle stops on a front steer FMC? The conversion to front steer was done by the shop in Illinois. I could not find any stops that would limit the turning radius and spindle movement. 2. Has anyone besides Len put a Safe-T-Plus steering damper on their FMC? Len says they are great. I was at the Safe-T-Plus factory in Austell, GA, yesterday with #589. They will install the damper for free if you buy it from them. They would not install the damper om #589 without stops. There damper only has 4" of travel each way, which appears to be adequate. The technician, a young guy, Jacob, who really knows his stuff, says I could bolt the danper between the spindle mount, with an adjustable mount on the drag link. It moves less than the max travel, without stops, but I must use a smaller tire than a 22.5. The people at Safe-T-Plus are as knowledgeable and just plain nice as any company I have deal with. Even my wife commented on how cordial they were to all the customers who came through. Henry

Henry,
You'll probably get more feedback on the IRV2 website, there are a lot of P32 Workhorse and F53 Ford chassis'd rigs that run the Safe-T-Plus. I'll look and see what the steering stops look like on mine today.
