So we just found #43 (I believe it was 43,) sitting in a scrapyard in Washington State.

It is all there from what I can tell (we went through it, considering buying it but I think we are passing). The good is that it is all there except for the rear bumper, the cover/grill in front of the radiator and it looks like it is missing exhaust manifolds (they are not on, not sure if they are tucked away). So not sure if it is running at the moment.

The bad is that the interior is tired. Its all there, in OK condition, but like the trim around the doors is de laminating. Simple to fix and get straight.

I hate to see this get destroyed, don't think the owner if the scrapyard is in that kind of rush.

Oh, I don't think the nose is original, it has the square headlights but it is a low number machine which surprised me.

PM me if you want more info...

Hey Woody.

Just saw this now.

Can you share the price they were asking for the coach and/or the name of the business where you saw it?

What shape was the front glass in and what about the dash?

Of course I have to also ask - by chance did it have aluminum wheels on it?

Cheers,
Terry

It was located outside of Chehalis WA. Front glass was good, I think there had been an upgrade as the front looked like a 76 front (rectangular headlights) The whole machine looked relatively solid. Just the engine was not in running shape so we are passing, Got one that doesn't run as it is. Guys name is Bruce, he is a crusty bastard but don't let that throw you. 360 388 6797 is his number. No Alcoa's. I would have grabbed it if it did have them. The machine did not look like it had been upgraded much. looked pretty stock. Also, he has no interest in parting it. He actually called me and asked me if I would buy it if he had it running. I said yes (of course). Let me know how it goes.

No apology required and thanks for sharing regardless.

You'll find the folks on here are pretty dam good at doing that.

Carl:
Look in the albums on this site 'FMC 45' is that the Coach? If so it has a cracked block froze with no antifreeze.

Holy Cats George, That is it. I swear it said 43 on the plate and the condition looks pretty unchanged... A few things more missing (rear grill piece although it may be sitting around in the scrapyard). So Terry, blown engine. Not a death sentence for the old girl but....

Likely lots to work with there if someone is up for the work and investment.

Personally, I covet the 'A' models as they're more functional and people-friendly going down the road.

Regardless they look real cool, the 'J's always struck me as rolling cocktail lounge and although I never actually sat on the sofa-seat in mine for any length of time before I converted it to its current 'diner' state, I felt sorry for any of my passengers who had to. Even sitting at it trying to play cards with my wife was a pain-in-the-patoochee. Have to admit, I always liked showing-off as I demonstrated the cool action of the scissor-hinge convertible forward seat-back in mine. Got a few 'Ooooo's' and 'Ahhh's'. I managed to leave the forward 'J' seat untouched during my diner conversion which I'm happy with. It makes down into about an 8-foot long bed - in case I ever happen to pick up Wilt Chamberlain hitch-hiking somewhere.

I've recently had another opportunity come up with a different coach that I'm focused on now, so I'm going to pass on inquiring about #45 for now.

Hopefully Crusty will find an owner for it.

Hey George. He had asked me for 2K for it. I am quite sure you could get it for less. As it was not running, it was a pass for me. If interested I can find his number for you. He is a definite oddball but he has an FMC sitting in his lot...
