The Forum is organized into Categories, such as general conversation, publications, etc.
Each category contains a set of Forums, which are subjects for conversation or comment.
Each Forum contains a set of threads. For example, a resident might post a new thread that says "The Wal-Mart deal was killed" and another resident will reply with more information. A third person, or the original author, might then reply in reaction to the new information. It's just like if you sent an email, received a reply, and replied to the reply.
