CB, antenna solution or maybe Walkie Talkies

On several group runs in the FMC, the communications while traveling was marginal or nonexistent. My CB is old and the antenna is practically worthless. The connector on top of the coach is unusable, currently using a through the glass antenna on the passenger side. I have seen antennas mounted on the mirror arms and beside the driver; don’t care for either of those. When stopped on the interstate for a wreck or whatever, I can pick up the truckers very close by.

Really need to upgrade, just wondering if anyone has researched this and has a reasonably priced solution. My preference would be to fix the connector on top of the coach, but don't think that is possible. Ground plane is an issue.

Denny, your coach probably has the ground plane built into you your coach on top of the head liner. At some point, they started putting a large sheet of metal attached to the underside of the roof beams. A strap attaches that to the roof antenna connector. I am not sure how to access this for repair. From the bottom, you can drop some cabinets and then drop the side of the ceiling liner and see it. From the roof side, I think you could cut an access size hole in the fiberglass, repair/replace the roof mount connector and then repair the fiberglass.

A SWR meter is essential. most antenna mastsare too long so they can be cut to size. The SWR meter in you CB unit is mostly eye candy.

When ever we get together, and if someone reminds me I can bring a real meter and we can fine tune your radio.
